03/21/2012 -- TXANS 22nd ANNUAL NONSUBSCRIBER CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION

TXANS conference, scheduled for March 21-22, 2012 in Austin Texas, will focus on responsible options for Texas employers that operate without workers’ compensation insurance coverage.

10/13/2011 -- NONSUBSCRIBER EMPLOYEE WORK INJURY PLANS

With very limited exception, employers who choose to operate as nonsubscribers to the workers' compensation system should adopt a written employee work-injury benefit plan. The primary purpose of the "the plan" is to help ensure employees receive the benefits promised should a qualifying workplace injury occur. But the plan can also serve the employer by helping to ensure the right benefits are provided while also enabling better management of the medical and financial issues typically associated with workplace injuries.

09/22/2011 -- NEW LAW PROHIBITS EMPLOYERS FROM BANNING FIREARMS IN COMPANY PARKING AREAS

A new Texas law provides that employers can no longer prohibit certain employees from storing firearms in their parked vehicles while at work.
During the last legislative session the underlying legislation passed both the Texas House and Senate with overwhelming margins after proponents asserted a ban denies employees the ability to protect themselves while travelling to and from work. Proponents also argued that banning storage of firearms in personal vehicles hinders hunters who may wish to go hunting after their shift.
Opponents of the measure argued in favor of property owners, asserting that lawmakers should not interfere with individual property rights as quick access to guns could lead to increased incidences of violence for which the business could be held liable.
